What is housing assistance?

Housing assistance is available to help people with low and moderate incomes, including the elderly and the disabled. The federal government offers housing assistance through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). HUD also contracts with state and local agencies to make sure everyone has access to safe and affordable housing. The public housing program offers safe, clean rental housing to the neediest members of the population, including low-income families, people with disabilities and the elderly. Families and individuals who qualify for the public housing program still pay a portion of the rent, but the rent cost is far more affordable than what they would pay for a non-assisted rental home. The rental units may be single-family houses, multi-unit homes and apartments. Approximately 1.2 million people live in public housing, and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is responsible for managing this program through local housing agencies.
